A Symptomatic Analysis of Paranasal Sinusitis

Abstract
Paranasal sinusitis is one of the most frequently encountered chronic condition in the otolaryngologic field and is characterized by symptoms of nasal obstruction, mucoid or purulent rhinorrhea, postnasal drip, anosmia and headache.
Critical comparison of the management results is difficult due to limited knowledge of the prognostic factors and variable criteria reported for success. Among the tools of analyzing the sinusitis condition, quantifying the symptoms, radiologic
data and
endoscopic findings, we employed symptom score which is proposed by Kennedy, the numeric score to quantifying the major nine sinusitis symptoms. A prospective individual review of 94 patients reveals the most common symptoms as follows ; nasal
obstruction(70%), mucoid to purulent rhinorrhea(56%), postnasal drip(43%) and halitosis(34%). Numeric score of the sinusitis symptoms was higher as increasing grade of the sinusitis stage. It seems to be helpful to employ symptom score to assess
preoperative sinusitis condition and management results.
